The Detroit Tigers compete in the American League’s Central Division and are one of the most decorated sides in Major League Baseball. Based in Detroit Michigan for their 115-year history, they originally played their home games at Bennet Park, but quickly moved to the aptly-named Tiger Stadium from 1912-1999. In the year 2000, they moved to Comerica Park, where they remain to this day. The Tigers have won four World Series titles, but haven’t done so since 1984.
Despite this lack of success in World Series terms, The Tigers have won 11 American League Pennants, their last coming in 2012. They have triumphed with seven Divisional titles, three of them coming in the East Division between 1972-1987, before they moved to Central. Their four back-to-back Central titles came between 2011-2014, and represent their most consistent period of success outside World Series championships.
There are a number of stories behind the Detroit Tigers’ nickname, and its origin. Some say that the orange stripes they wore on black stockings are the reason. Others claim that a sportswriter in 1901 summarised Detroit’s opening day win by comparing it favourably with the ferocity of his alma mater, the Princeton Tigers. The Detroit Light Guard were known as The Tigers, and fought in the Civil and Spanish~American wars. One thing is for sure, that The Tigers were known as such before they acquired one of the most famous players in baseball history. The fearless, some say peerless, Ty Cobb was an outfielder with the heart of a tiger and his era between 1905-1926 is still heralded as a historic period.
The worst period in The Tigers’ history may be 2003, which saw them fall just short of losing the most games in a Major League Baseball season when they won five of their last six. But this was only because The Minnesota Twins had already clinched the Central Division, and fielded a weakened side because of it. Could the 2003 side have been the worst ever? We’ll never really know.
The period between 2011-2014 remains one of the best in Detroit’s distinguished history. During this period, they signed the all-star first baseman Prince Fielder (what a name!) for a $214m contract that would last nine years. With ace hitter Miguel Cabrera earning the American League Triple Crown of most home runs, highest batting average and runs batted in during the 2012 season, many fancied them for World Series glory. But against the odds, they lost to the San Francisco Giants, including two shut-outs. The best hitters in the American League were locked down in a stunning defensive display.
Can the Detroit Tigers win the 2016 World Series? They would be many people’s picks and providing the value is there on a game-by-game basis, we’d put no-one off backing of the most dangerous teams on the planet!
