Betting Underdogs Dominate PGA TPC Leaderboard
Prior to the start of The Players Championship at our sister site, Online Sports Betting, we warned bettors “this is a wide open field – watch out for the dogs”. Playing out this week at the beautiful TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the TPC leaderboard is littered with underdogs – favorites are lurking though. With at least 36 holes to go, there’s still plenty of golf left – before we crown an underdog Champion!
The Players Championship Tournament: Pups Growing Up
Checking the leaderboard, after two rounds are complete at the TPC at Sawgrass, we find several betting underdogs leading the pack. After a blistering 66 in round two, opening day 50/1 longshot Zach Johnson is in a three-way tie at the top. Matt Kuchar (40/1) shot back-to-back solid rounds of 68, and 125/1 super puppy, Kevin Na (67, 69) join Johnson at the half way point. Their -8 leads are hardly safe with two rounds still to go.
After seven birdies and a sizzling -5 in round one, 200/1 pup Harris English was two under on Thursday and sits one stroke back of the leaders at -7 after two days. A log jam of five golfers sit tied for third at -6. That includes Adam Scott who started the TPC at 40/1, and four underdogs who opened between 100/1 to 150/1.
Chalk Lurking at the Always Dangerous TPC at Sawgrass Course
With the likes of an “Island Green” hole, that swallowed 50 golf balls in Round One back in 2007 (30 in the drink so far this year) the TPC at Sawgrass course can mow down the best golfers on the planet – not to mention those who are unfamiliar with “top of the leaderboard” territory. For that reason we won’t burn any betting tickets that have chalk on them just yet. The favorites do have some work ahead of them though.
Though they looked buried down the list, Lee Westwood (12/1) and Luke Donald (15/1) come in at -3 and, believe it or not – so do 11 other golfers who are tied for 17th overall. Phil Mickelson and Eldrick, who started with 20/1 odds, are in a group of eleven PGA pros sporting -2 after two rounds. Tournament favorite Rory McIlroy (9/1) is heading back to Ireland after he shot a two round 148 to finish four strokes off the cut line.
Online Betting Boards Post Fresh Third Round 2012 TPC Wagering Lines
Our top rated online sportsbooks love to dole out the bonus bucks on the weekend. Golf fans can boost their betting bankroll, by scooping a deposit bonus, and then bet on the fresh list off betting lines for the TPC action set to tee off on Saturday and Sunday. Even though he is just six shots back, and still has a chance to win, we would stay far away from Eldrick – or any of the pre-tournament 20/1 and under favorites for that matter.
