Against The Spread: Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers

TeamBovadaBetOnline
San Francisco spread (-4)-110-110
Miami spread (+4)-110-110

We begin the betting slate with a juicy matchup featuring two coaches who know each other too well — Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel. It’s a must-watch matchup and a must-bet one too. In particular, we see value in the Dolphins-49ers spread, which favors San Fran at home.

Hoopla will be rampant around the two head coaches, who spent the 16 past years tied by the hip. You’re going to hear terms like “San Francisco East” or “YAC” thrown out a lot in the lead-up, but little of that matters. In fact, we think this game will be won and lost in the trenches.

We’ll be upfront and say the Dolphins are in trouble. Its Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead injured his pec last weekend and is out of action indefinitely. As soon as he left Sunday’s game, Miami promptly allowed four sacks in a short span — against the lowly Texans, no less. Not only that, but the Dolphins' opposite tackle, Austin Jackson, left the same game with an ankle injury of some sort (his status is up in the air).

Having a shaky offensive line is especially worrisome against a 49ers front that’s among the league’s best. The unit is led by Nick Bosa, who has 11.5 sacks this season, which ranks third-best league-wide.

Tua Tagovailoa is playing at an MVP level right now, but without time in the pocket to allow his speedy receivers to break open, his play will suffer. We got the Niners rolling to victory in this one, covering the spread in the process.

Over/Under 52.5 Points: Kansas City Chiefs at Cincinnati Bengals

OutcomeBovadaBetOnline
Over 52.5 points-110-110
Under 52.5 points-110-110

It’s an AFC Conference Championship game rematch in this one — only this time the game is in Cincy, not Kansas City. Both times have mostly carried over their success in 2022, especially offensively. That’s a big reason why the Bengals-Chiefs over/under is set to a steep 52.5 points.

Kansas City possesses the league’s best record (9-2). That mark has been keyed by KC's league-leading offense that’s averaging 29.6 points per game and 430 years, both firsts in the NFL. Despite losing Tyreek Hill’s big-play potential, the Chiefs have made up for it with an attack predicated on yards after the catch.

Cincy, however, has an offense not far behind. They average 367.1 yards (sixth overall) and 25.9 points (fifth). This attack has been without stud wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase for the past month, but he’s inching closer to a return to the field. Chase hasn’t been confirmed for the Chiefs game but has been practicing in the lead-up to it.

Both teams and quarterbacks are flying high going into this game. Our money says that trend continues, which is good news for the over 52.5 hitting.

Against The Spread: Cleveland Browns at Houston Texans

TeamBovadaBetOnline
Cleveland spread (-7.5)-110-110
Houston spread (+7.5)-110-110

At last, Deshaun Watson is back from an 11-game suspension and ironically, it comes against his former team, the Texans, in his old stadium. Tension will be high in this one pregame, but probably not the game itself — not if you look at the odds at least. Oddsmakers are pegging the Browns as touchdown favorites in the “Watson Bowl.”

It’s fair to question Watson from a playing rust standpoint. Let’s not forget, Watson didn’t just sit out 11 games this year. He also sat out the whole 2021 season. That means it’s been almost two years since Watson took a snap in the NFL. We’d be stunned to see him looking like his old top-5 quarterback talent so fast out of the gate with a new team and playing system.

But here’s the thing: Watson doesn’t have to even be elite to help Cleveland cover the spread. That’s because Houston is absolutely atrocious. They’re the worst team in the NFL and it’s not even close. The one-win team has given the quarterback job to Kyle Allen. In his first-ever start on Sunday against Miami, the Allen-led offense was promptly held to under 60 yards in the first half when they fell down 30-0.

We don’t expect Allen to fare any better against the Browns, whose defense might be riled up by the return of Watson. So we’re taking Cleveland to cover and make it look easy in the process. The Texans really are that bad all things considered.
