The 2016 Rio Olympics are about to get under way, which means it’s time to riff on the most famous participating athletes. Obviously. Fame was quantified here using a variety of methods: social media notoriety, Twitter followings, name recognition, number of endorsements, etc.

(Spoiler: Get ready for a lot of tennis stars and United States athletes.)

This, to be absolutely clear again, isn’t a ranking of the best athletes, just the ones you’re most likely to recognize. They are listed in alphabetical order, using their last name (damn you, Neymar).
