But make no mistake, the usual teams are still the favorites including the two-time reigning champs United States, the current Olympic gold medalists Canada, and England, the European champions. Best Bets To Win 2023 Women’s World Cup
This is a wide-open tournament. While the United States has historically dominated this event, things are changing. The women’s game is growing globally and that means the gap between the US and the rest is shrinking too. This is why we’re advocating two different bets on the World Cup winner. United States
This is no surprise if you read the article headline. It’s also not a surprise knowing that the US women are the measuring stick in this sport. Part of this is a natural aging-out process, but others were because injuries forced Andonovski’s hand. Top players like Mallory Swanson, captain Becky Sauerbrunn, and rising star Catarina Macario are three of many injured players not making the trip.
Still, familiar names like Alex Morgan, Julie Ertz, and Megan Rapinoe are in the mix. Rapinoe has announced she’s retiring at the conclusion of this event, and for all we know, the end could be near for Morgan (making her fourth World Cup appearance) and Ertz (third appearance).
Andonovski will have a juggling act on his hands with this roster — mixing the old with the new. We’d be foolish to believe the United States will roll to victory like we’ve become used to. But at the same time, we’d be foolish to not believe the US can gel quickly given its talent. So we’re putting money on the Americans, but a hedge bet elsewhere is necessary too. Among the field, one other team comes to mind:
Spain
In Europe, the usual powerhouses are England and Germany. However, we’re convinced there’s a changing of the guard happening and Spain will now become the continent’s big powerhouse. The talent is deep — and we mean deep — with La Roja, in spite of many players protesting and sitting out the tournament.
Leading the team is the best female player in the world today, Alexia Putellas. She’s the two-time reigning Ballon d’Or winner. She is coming back from an ACL injury, which is worrisome, but even an Alexia at, say, 85 percent fitness is a game-changer. The rest of the roster is filled out by Barcelona Academy standouts. The world-class club has invested deeply in the women’s program over the past decade and it’s starting to pay dividends.
Spain is bound for a run here. We’d confidently put money on them as a threat to end the US’s reign atop the women’s game.
