MLS Betting Odds & Weekend Review

What Happened This Weekend In The MLS

By Matt Pitt

NYCFC 0 – 7 New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls put on a dazzling attacking performance this weekend, running out 7-0 winners away at nearby rivals NYCFC. The result, Red Bulls’ first on the road win, sees the Red Bulls climb to third place in the Eastern Conference, and leaves NYCFC with a negative goal difference.

It only took three minutes to open the scoring, Dax McCarty putting the visitors one-nil up. Late second half goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips meant the Red Bulls went into the interval leading 3-0, and it was five nil by the 56th minute thanks to a second goal for McCarty and one from Alex Muyl.

The embarrassment mounted in the 83rd and 89th minutes when Gonzalez Veron and Gideon Baah made it 7-0! Patrick Vieira, the NYCFC coach, said after the game, “It’s better to lose one game 7-0 than lose seven games 1-0.”

Two positives were drawn from the heavy defeat, those being the debuts of Frank Lampard and Jack Harrison, the latter being the number one pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.

Toronto FC 0 – 0 Columbus Crew SC

Columbus Crew

The game between Toronto FC and Columbus Crew SC ended in a 0-0 draw despite the teams managing 22 shots between them. A couple of good saves from Steve Clark in the Columbus goal, and four from Clint Irwin for Toronto, played their part in this stalemate.

Both teams lacked quality in the final third and it showed in this encounter. Columbus, now without Kei Kamara who was traded to New England Revolution, have only scored 12 times during the current campaign, which is one of the reasons that they are languishing in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, only a single point ahead of Chicago Fire who happen to be the MLS worst goal scorers.

Toronto travel to the Red Bulls this Saturday while Columbus are at home to Real Salt Lake.

L.A. Galaxy 1 - 1 San Jose Earthquakes

L.A. Galaxy

L.A. Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes played out a 1-1 draw in front of 27,167 fans at the StubHub Centre, but it was a game that could quite easily have finished 3-3 on another day.

Waves of attacks from both teams proved fruitless for almost all of the game, with both sides hitting the post and crossbar. Galaxy found a breakthrough on 83 minutes when Marvell Wynne put the ball into his own goal, but Fatai Alashe levelled for the visitors four minutes later to secure a point for the Quakes, who are still without an away win this season.
