Preview Of 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix

It’s a new track, but the same ol’ names are favored to win the competition. Let’s start this preview of the Las Vegas GP with a quick look at the betting odds. Verstappen leads the way again with a big gap in between. Here’s the current Formula 1 odds to win:

Max Verstappen-425-425-425
Lando Norris+800+800+800
Lewis Hamilton+1600+1600+1600
Carlos Sainz+1500+1500+1500
Charles Leclerc+1600+1600+1600
Sergio Perez+1800+1800+1800

This is not the first-ever F1 race in Las Vegas. That would actually be 40 years ago when the 1982 Caesars Palace Grand Prix happened. But that was a one-and-done affair. The 2023 iteration marks the first event in a 10-year agreement with F1 and the city. This will be one of the more unique races on the schedule, which makes sense for a one-of-a-kind city.

The first thing that sticks out about the Las Vegas GP is the start time. It’s a night race, but not just any night race. The start time is 10 pm EST. Why? Well because it’s a street race around the busy Las Vegas Strip that houses the city’s biggest casinos. You can only zoom around that city if traffic is shut down which is easier to pull off late at night (when rush hour is long gone). Practice and qualifying will also be done near midnight in the days before.

Oh, and because of the near-midnight start, this race will be on the cold side — probably single digits Celsius. Again, that’s going to affect performance. Colder tracks mean tyres need more time to warm up and this will likely exert more energy. This makes pit-stopping even more important. Not to mention chilly temperatures can also change braking times (making it slower rather than faster)

Obviously, a weird start time and temperature like this impacts the viewers of the sport, but what about the drivers and teams themselves? Well, that remains to be seen cause these types of racing conditions are unprecedented. Hell, this whole race — as any new track does — is unpredictable to put a finger on. You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

Elsewhere, the race track is 6.1 kilometers. That’s on the long side with only Spa and Jeddah being longer. There are 17 flowing corners but the track features a heavy dose of long straightaways too. That would favor cars that can go full-throttle, and that’s obviously Red Bull, which leads us to our picks.

Best Bets For Las Vegas Grand Prix

As we said, there are a lot of unknowns with this event since it’s brand-spanking new. That’s why you’d be smart to spread your money around when betting on the Las Vegas Grand Prix. You want backup plans in case things go awry, which is probable given the newness of this track.

Race Winner

New track, same ol result? Probably. Red Bull is now up to 19 wins in 20 events. A 20th win would set an all-time record for any team in a single season (Mercedes also won 19 in 2016). You’d be crazy not to throw money on Verstappen or Perez here given this level of domination.

Verstappen likely wins, but we’re not in love with that -425 line. The risk-reward just isn’t worth it so we’re personally vouching for a flyer bet on Perez. His +1800 odds are too tantalizing, especially when this track is tailor-made for Red Bull dominance.

Fast Lap Prop

Alright, here’s a prop bet that actually has some betting value — which driver will win fastest lap? Here’s the list of betting options:

DriverBovadaMyBookieBetOnline
Max Verstappen-165-165-165
Lando Norris+900+900+900
Lewis Hamilton+900+900+900
Carlos Sainz+900+900+900
Charles Leclerc+900+900+900
Sergio Perez+1000+1000+1000
George Russell+1400+1400+1400

It’s worth putting money on Verstappen here. Admittedly, he hasn’t dominated this as much as full-on races. Verstappen has eight fastest laps this season with his last coming months ago in Qatar. He’s also said this event is “99% show and 1% sporting” so you can sense Verstappen isn’t too fond of it. That might be the fuel he needs to run without regard and extend the record-breaking dominance we’ve seen out of him all 2023.
