2022 NASCAR Playoffs Update

For the longest of times, the Dixie Vodka 400 race at Miami-Homestead was the season-ending race to determine the Cup Series tradition. That was from 1999 until 2020 when Phoenix replaced it as the Championship 4 competition. Regardless, it still has high playoff implications as Sunday will tell. Let us tell you about those implications with a 2022 NASCAR playoff update.

With a win at last weekend’s South Point 400 in Las Vegas, Joey Logano is on to the final round regardless of what happens in this race or the other Round of 8 one afterward in Martinsville. The Cup Series puts a huge premium on outright victories and that’s what Logano did in the Nevada desert. Logano rocketed past fellow playoff contender Ross Chastain in the closing laps.

Speaking of Chastain, he’s second in the Cup Series standings to Logano, trailing by 21 points. But more importantly, Chastain is trailed closely by Chase Elliott (one point off) and Denny Hamlin (12 points). All four would advance to the Championship 4 if things were to end today. Standings will determine who joins Logano in the championship race unless a playoff contender wins one of the next two races. In that case, they move on no matter the point standings.

Drivers that are on the outside looking in right now are Will Byron, Chase Briscoe, Ryan Blaney, and Christopher Bell (placed fifth through eighth, in order, in the Cup Series standings). One of the four either needs to win to advance or push up the pecking order in the next two events.

This is the first race with the Next Gen car at the storied track in South Florida. Though, drivers did test out the course about a month ago in anticipation of this race. During the test trials, Logano posted the fastest lap at 167.126 miles per hour. The next fastest drivers included Brad Keselowski (167.033 mph), Kyle Larson (166.641 mph), Ryan Blaney (166.569 mph), and Denny Hamlin (166.441 mph).

Best Picks To Win NASCAR Miami-Homestead

Per usual with NASCAR, we’ll be making more than one pick to win the looming Miami-Homestead race. If this season has taught us anything, is that the sport is more competitive than it’s ever been. Therefore, going “all in” on a single driver just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense — especially at these long odds across the board.

Denny Hamlin

We could very well see the “old timer” Hamlin punching his ticket to Phoenix with an outright win here. He has quite the checkered history here, perhaps more so than any of the field.

For starters, his average finish at Miami-Homestead is 10.0. He’s also taken the pile on five different occasions, one of which translated into a victory. All time, he has the third-most led laps at the famed track, 137 of which came during his victory. This all makes him a worthy bet to win!

Ross Chastain

Chastain has been the breakout star of the Next Gen car season and we’d ride his momentum in this one again. And that’s exactly what Chastain has — momentum and an abundance of it. Yes, losing Las Vegas (after leading for 68 laps) so down to the wire hurts, but Chastain has proven to be in contention in almost every postseason event. Aside from the road course in Charlotte, Chastain has finished no worse than 13th each time out. We love the consistency, which warrants a bet from us on Chastain.
