Preakness Stakes Picks 2021

The 2021 Preakness Stakes will be run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, May 15, 2021. After running in October of last year, the race is back at its traditional place on the calendar: two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, the second jewel of the American Triple Crown.

2021 Preakness Horses

The 2021 Preakness field, with Preakness trainers and jockeys as well as official morning lines, is as follows:

Preakness Contenders

#3 Medina Spirit, assuming he passes his pre-race drug test and is allowed to run in the race, will be the favorite in the Preakness. His trainer Bob Baffert has won a record 7 editions of the Preakness and has never run worse than second with a Derby winner in the Preakness. Medina Spirit’s game frontrunning style should fit Pimlico well, too.

#5 Midnight Bourbon only ran sixth in the Kentucky Derby, but it was a very good effort considering the fact that he had a poor start and was taken off of his usual style of running right with the leaders. He still showed good interest to rally and finish as well as he did. With a better break, he should be forward, and he is consistent and game enough to stay around late.

#10 Concert Tour is Medina Spirit’s stablemate in the Bob Baffert barn, and will also be permitted pending a drug test. He has the speed to be forward early, a plus at Pimlico. But, he comes out of an Arkansas Derby that featured a weaker field than usual and failed as the favorite. Between that and the far outside post, he will be an underlay on race day.

#4 Crowded Trade is one of two from the Chad Brown barn, and the more interesting of his pair. He fits the same profile as his Preakness winner four years ago: a lightly-raced horse who got some shares on the New York spur of the Derby trail, and is set to take a step forward in a Preakness that perhaps is not the deepest. Javier Castellano, a two-time Preakness winner (including with Brown’s Cloud Computing) takes the call.

#6 Rombauer showed an interesting new dimension when running third in the Blue Grass: he sat closer to the pace than he had before. Given that Pimlico can reward tactical speed, that is a good skill to see coming into the race. Furthermore, trainer Michael McCarthy has an excellent record when shipping horses out for races, suggesting strong confidence.

#8 Unbridled Honor comes out for trainer Todd Pletcher. He is less likely to win than some of these, between his inexperience and his late-running style. But, the Pletcher barn is going well, and there should be enough pace in front of him to set up for him to come running into the trifecta or superfecta at a nice price.
