The US Open Grand Slam isn’t until August 29 but it’s never too early to begin planning your bets for it. It’s important to note some of the favored players up top might not even compete at the famed Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. First, there’s Rafael Nadal. He had to withdraw from the semi-finals of Wimbledon with an abdominal tear. The untimely injury ended his hopes of claiming three straight Grand Slam titles. Still, Nadal’s own timeline has him returning to the Montreal Open and then partaking in the US Open.
That’s the best-case scenario, obviously. But at his age (36 now), it’s no guarantee he’ll be at 100 percent while going for his 23rd major title at the US Open. For now, it’s best to skip betting on Nadal until we see his playing form closer to US Open time.
And then there’s Novak Djokovic. As of right now, Djokovic is banned from entering the United States altogether. The country only allows non-citizens who are vaccinated to enter, which consequently disqualifies Djokovic from playing. Laws — especially those related to COVID — are ever-changing but it’s unlikely the rule is dropped from now until the end of August. Djokovic is another name you want to avoid wagering on.
With the status of two all-timers like Nadal and Djokovic in question, plus the likely absence of the injured Alexander Zverev, the path to the US title could be wide-open for two players — Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev is the defending champion, having beaten Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finale. Alcaraz, on the other hand, has had as good of a 2022 season as almost anyone, sans Nadal, with four separate wins.
Neither of the two would be bad bets, however, if we must choose one of them to win out we’re taking the 19-year-old Alcaraz. The hard-court surface favors him ever slightly. This year, he is 12-2 on hard surfaces whereas Medvedev is 16-5. Alcaraz is missing that Grand Slam victory until he’s officially crowned as the sports “next best thing” and our gut says the upcoming US Open is where he gets it.

While she doesn’t have the best track record at this event — her career-best finish is only the fourth round (2021) — this isn’t the same Swiatek that’s stepped foot onto the US Open before. No, this version of Swiatek is better and near unstoppable on hard surfaces.
This year, Swiatek has dominated the entire women’s field in a historic fashion. That dominance includes six straight tournament titles and a 37-match win streak. While both those streaks were snapped at Wimbledon (Swiatek was bounced in only the third round), a return to the hardcourts should get her back on track. Her 2022 record on the surface is a whopping 22-3. This success is why we’re so confident that Swiatek is must-bet material.
One word about Osaka, who is the second-most favored to take the women’s singles championship. Yes, she’s a two-time winner of the US Open, but we’d tread carefully with her.
