2023 Paris Masters Preview

Typically, we would begin our preview of the Paris Masters with a look at the betting odds. The issue is that the top tennis betting sites haven’t posted them yet — and probably won’t until the draw happens on Saturday, October 28. But let’s be real, we all know which guys are going to be the betting favorites once that happens. The table below lists the early contenders:

For those not in the know, Paris is a rather unique ATP 1000 event. That’s because it’s played indoors — the only such event among all the 1000 tournaments. That indoor hardcourt, which became a thing in 2007, makes the Paris Masters an extremely fast-paced surface to compete on, which is actually a pro to most participating players.

This is why you’ll get a good entrant list almost every year, including this one. Surprise surprise, Djokovic is the winningest player this event has ever seen. He’s a six-time champion but was upset in stunning fashion by Rune a year ago. Outside of the two, there are two other former champions in the bracket in Medvedev and Khachanov.

Of course, Alcaraz has the best chance of joining that group of winners. His status for this event was long questioned due to injury. Alcaraz has battled back and foot injuries, which forced him out of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. But the No. 2-ranked player is in the mix, but at what capacity is top of mind for everyone, especially bettors.

The prize pool for this event is just over $6 million. The singles winner will take him about $950,000 — not a bad chunk of change if we do say so ourselves.

Best Pick To Win 2023 Paris Masters

You have to bet on Djokovic to win the 2023 Paris Masters. Have to — and that’s not something we like to say either sports betting due to its unpredictable nature. But it’s never a smart idea to bet against greatness and that’s Djokovic to a tee after claiming another three Grand Slams in 2023. He’s now up to a record 24 titles.

Here’s why we’re extra confident in Djokovic’s chances in Paris this week: he’s extremely well-rested. He skipped the Asia tour events following his U.S. Open triumph. This is Djokovic’s first return to the court since then and we expect him at full capacity, which is a scary thought.

Speaking of capacity, we don’t expect Alcaraz to be anywhere near 100 percent. He did not skip the Asia tour and the injury bug caught up to him there. It’s worth remembering Alcaraz’s body also failed to hold up at the end of the 2022 season. He’s still a youngster but it’s fair to wonder whether the slog of the tennis season catches up to him at year’s end.

If you’re looking for a non-Djokovic bet then we’d prioritize Medvedev, a former winner in 2020. He was shockingly upset early here in 2022, but has a good history at the event (in 2021 he reached the Finals too). Plus, the hard surface certainly plays to his strengths. Once the odds are posted, a combo bet on Djokovic and Medvedev makes a whole lot of sense here.
