Pegasus World Cup Favorites
National Treasure will be a well-defined favorite in the Pegasus, but he is worth betting against. He comes out of a traditionally live race, the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, and his frontrunning style should play well at Gulfstream. But, he has never been the most consistent horse and he does not tend to start with his best form first off a layoff. That makes him a serious underlay in the Pegasus.
First Mission is a more attractive candidate for the 2024 Pegasus World Cup. Though he missed by a nose in the Clark last out, he is a better horse from a stalking position than when he has to battle on the lead. He should be able to work that kind of stalking trip here. The 1 ⅛-mile distance suits him beautifully, and he should be a factor from start to finish.
Pegasus World Cup Mid-Priced Contender
Even though Skippylongstocking has to deal with a challenging outside post position, there are still a lot of reasons to like him. He can work out a clean outside tracking trip from that post. The 1 ⅛-mile distance suits him well, and he is also well proven on the Gulfstream surface. Though he faltered in the Pegasus last year, he is a more seasoned and classier horse a year later.
Pegasus World Cup Longshots
Even though Hoist the Gold is proven as a sprinter, not a router, there are factors that make him interesting here for Dallas Stewart, a trainer with a strong history of sending out upset candidates in major horse races. He has some pedigree on both sides to suggest a stretch out could work. And, with both sharp early speed and a proven stalking gear, he has the tools to work a trip under hall of fame rider John Velazquez.
For a horse to run on late for a share of the trifecta or superfecta, it’s hard to do better than Senor Buscador. His closing style puts him up against it on the win end, especially at Gulfstream, but with several speed horses he should get an honest enough pace to pass horses late. He is well proven as a horse who bring his race with him to different tracks and face top company, and if he runs his race he can fill out the exotics.
