2023 PGA Championship Preview

It’s a major so, of course, you’re getting the best of the best in the world for the PGA Championship. Ninety-nine of the top 100 players in the world will compete in Rochester (only Will Zalatoris is missing, due to injury). It’s only fair we begin our preview of the PGA Championship with a look-see at the current odds. Among the field, the following players are most favored odds-wise at top betting sites for golf:

Justin Thomas+3000+3000+3000
Dustin Johnson+3000+3000+3000

This marks the 105th edition of the PGA Championship. Oak Hill gets the hosting honor this time around — it’s the first since 2013. There are two courses here, but the East is the well-known part where this tourney goes down. The East Course stretches 7,394 yards, which is typically to big hitters' benefit. Though, there is some light rain forecasted over the next few days, which could add a wrinkle to the course.

Justin Thomas is the reigning champion. Last year, Thomas came back from seven shots to topple Mito Pereira and then Zalatoris in overtime. That marked his second-ever Wanamaker Trophy win. Alas, that was at a different course though. Thomas has been in a slump which explains his rather long odds (+3000). While he’s not getting our money here, three other players are, which we’ll dive into next.

Best Bets To Win 2023 PGA Championship

There’s no shortage of star power in the tourney, and that includes LIV golfers. That’s why making multiple bets on the PGA Championship winner is a necessity — the field is too strong to go “all in” on one player. Personally, we think three different bets make sense. The players we’re most in love with, based on multiple factors, are featured next:

Jon Rahm

If you believe in “riding the hot hand” then Rahm is a must-bet. We certainly believe the phrase and there’s simply no one entering the tourney with more momentum than the Spaniard. Rahm has four wins over the past four months, but none more head-turning than taking the Masters by four strokes. He ranks No. 1 in a slew of different calories, including work ranking, strokes gained total, and early and late wave scoring, among many others. We could spit out more statistics, but they're all obvious to anyone that’s been following the sport in 2023: Rahm has been on a different level than anyone else.

Brooke Koepka

There might not be a better player in the world at this event in the past decade than Koepka himself. The resume speaks for itself. Since 2015, Koepka has twice won this major. He has an additional three top-5s in that span too. Only on two occasions did Koepka finish outside the top-13 all those years. Convinced yet?

His dominance at the PGA Championship is flying under the radar because of his “defection” to LIV Golf. But there’s no denying, he’s still one of the world’s best. Koepka led most of the Masters and recently took first at the LIV Orlando event. We’re jumping on Koepka’s line and not thinking twice about it since old and recent history suggests he’s bringing his best this week.

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa’s +3000 line is way too good for us to pass up on. We get the odds, we really do. Morikawa has had a lackluster 2023 season that now includes three cuts — most recently two weeks ago. However, this guy is a gamer. If it’s a major, you’re getting the best out of Morikawa. Six times in a row at a major he’s finished top-10 and has two prior wins, including the 2020 PGA Championship (at TPC Harding Park). So yes, go for value and take Morikawa to round out your bets.
