Against the Spread: Chicago Blackhawks at Winnipeg Jets
We're only three weeks into the hockey season, but it already feels like the Blackhawks are done for. A sexual assault allegation from a former prospect has been a black eye for the organization, resulting in several high-level resignations and a $2 million fine. The distraction has carried over into the ice where Chicago is a whopping 1-8-2 on the season — second-worst in the NFL.
It comes as no surprise that the Blackhawks are the big moneyline underdogs on the road. We feel there's more value in betting the spread, however. Here you have a team spiraling out of control AND on the road, if you're going to bet a -1.5 spread, this is the time.
We're betting on Winnipeg with confidence. They're a respectable 5-2-2 on the season and while they're not blowing teams out (its goal differential is only +3), this is the perfect opportunity against a hockey team swirling in chaos.
Over/Under 6 points: New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers
Two red-hot teams clash in Edmonton. The road team, the Randers, enter at 6-2-2, whereas the Oilers are even better at 8-1. This is the last of a three-game homestand for Edmonton, and they won the past two, outscoring opponents 10-4.
High-scoring affairs seem to be the norm when the Oilers are at home. They've gone 5-0 on overs in home games and we sense that trend continues on Friday night. There's just too much talent on both sides not too.
Never mind Edmenton's home-ice advantage, this team has one of the most potent offenses across the league. Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in points scored thus far. New York isn't nearly as loaded up top, but has a balanced offense to keep up the scoring pace. We're smashing the over here!
Against The Spread: Arizona Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks
The only team that's a bigger disaster this season than the aforementioned Blackhawks is the Coyotes. They haven't won a single game in 10 tries and get this, Arizona has been outscored by 29 goals this season! 29! The team has largely been a dumpster fire over the last decade, aside from last season's playoff appearance.
Given all that, of course we're going to bet against them here. The question becomes, should we wager Anaheim moneyline or spread? The former is the "safer" pick, but we're feeling risky and taking the spread instead. This is exactly why: all nine losses for the Coyotes this season, except two, have been by multi-goals. They're just not competitive whatsoever.
Moneyline: New Jersey Devils (+116) at Los Angeles Kings (-128)
Unfortunately for the Devils, they've caught the injury bug. Its star defenceman Dougie Hamilton was hurt last time out on Tuesday (a 4-0 defeat to Anaheim). No word on his status, but he appears to be out on Friday versus the Kings. It's a crucial loss for a New Jersey team that's already without its offensive centerpiece, Jack Hughes.
Sensing "blood in the water", we're of the belief that the Kings will capitalize on those absences, especially Hughes. He was doing it all for the Devils this season — scoring, creating offense for teammates and defending. Los Angeles money is the bet to cap Friday's night of hockey betting!
