Here we go — the matchup everyone expected and craved when the initial tournament draw came out. The old guard vs. the new guard. The top two ranked players (who’ve never faced each other before). The de-facto championship, in the eyes of some. As you’d imagine, the best tennis betting sites have the Alacraz-Djokovic moneyline odds razor-close:

You can’t argue with Alcaraz being the favorite here. He’s been on an absolute tear so far in Rolland Garros. The Spaniard is fresh off an impressive straight-set win over No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. With the victory, Alcaraz has now won every set he’s played this tournament minus one.
Djokovic’s path here hasn’t been nearly as easy. In the quarters, Karen Khachanov pushed the 22-time Grand Slam champion to five tiebreaks before bowing out in four sets. For all of Djokovic’s individual greatness over the years, the French Open (and clay courts) have been his only real shortcoming. Part of that is because a Spaniard phenom on clay was always in his way — that was Rafael Nadal in the past, but could very well be Alacaraz now.
We’re going out on a limb and picking Djokovic here. When was the last time we’ve seen him as a +175 underdog? We honestly can’t remember and that betting value alone intrigues us. Alcaraz probably should win given his strength on the clay court (three clay-court titles on the ATP in his short career), but -210 still feels too rich. Djokovic’s big-game experience (especially in five-set matches) might be the difference-maker here. Djokovic’s line is worth taking a shot on in our opinion, the risk to reward is too good to pass up for an all-time player.
Casper Ruud vs. Alexander Zverev Betting Pick
It’s unfortunate this matchup is being overlooked because of the juiciness of Djokovic-Alcaraz, but don’t sleep on this. Outside of Nadal, both Ruud and Zverev have had the most success at Roland Garros since 2020. Each has reached the semis multiple times now. Zverev is the slightest of betting favorites over Ruud, but this is practically a pick ‘em bet:

You could make a good case for either winning. We’ll start with Zverev. His big thing is a better record in head-to-head meetings vs. Ruud. The German has won two of three matches, albeit all of ‘em on the hard court. Ruud, like Alcaraz, excels on the clay. Nine of his ten career ATP titles have come on such a surface.
Zverev certainly has the “story” going for him in this one, as this very semifinal spot is where he gruesomely injured his ankle a year ago. The injury cost him the rest of the 2022 season. Still, we got a feeling Ruud will play spoiler. His dominance on the clay flies under the radar because of Alacraz and Nadal, but it’s nothing to overlook.
Novak Djokovic vs. Casper Rudd Betting Pick
Alright, here’s a bonus bet on what we believe will be the French Open Final — a meeting between the two semifinals underdogs. Of course, no odds are available since it’s far from official. But if it happens, there’s zero doubt in our mind that Djokovic would be the betting favorite over Rudd to win.
We’d confidently back Djokovic too. The allure of winning his 23rd Grand Slam — breaking his current tie with Nadal for the most ever — is too strong to bet against. Doing it at Nadal’s favorite event would be poetic justice too for long-time rival, Djokovic.
But not just that, we doubt Rudd has the killer instinct needed to win a five-set match with an all-timer. For all his success, Rudd has never won the “big one.” He’s made two Grand Slam finals (each last year at this event and the US Open), but was promptly beaten both times (Rudd won just one set combined). It’s never a bad idea to back greatness, and that’s why we’re so confident in Djokovic the rest of the way.
