2022 MotoGP Season Preview
The Qatar Grand Prix on March 6 offered a perfect preview of the 2022 MotoGP season — and that’s, perhaps, Ducati domination. It was widely believed no team had a better bike going into this season than Ducati. In the season lead-up, the Desmosedici exceeded every other bike on the grid in most measurements of speed, which translated into Qatar.
Ducati’s Enea Bastianini finished first at the Qatar GP, just barely beating out KTM’s Brad Binder at the finish line. He stepped up when fellow Ducati drivers crashed out. Jack Miller retired early due to an issue with his GP22, while Francesco Bagnaia crashed on lap 12. But despite the misfortunes, the Ducati bike and its performance look as good as advertised — if not better.
Betting Advice For 2022 MotoGP Championship
Unlike say Formula 1, there’s a whole lot more variance with MotoGP. That’s obvious when you look at individual race winners. During 2020, a record-tying nine different riders won an event. In 2021, that number was eight. Unpredictability is high in the sport, which means you want to continually adapt. We have betting advice for the 2022 MotoGP season below, but we will be quick to change our minds based on new information. But as things stand, here’s what we’re preaching betting-wise:
Fade Quartararo To Repeat
The reigning world champion is Fabio Quartararo, winning the 2021 title with two races to spare (he finished points ahead of Bagnaia). He remains one of the top favorites this year at popular betting sites, but we’re avoiding him like the plague for now. That’s because his Yamaha bike has serious question marks — questions that even Quartararo has been raising since the preseason.
In Qatar, those worries became apparent. In qualifying, Quartararo finished 11th overall. During the actual race, the Frenchman inched up to a ninth-place finish — certainly not a strong showing for a defending title-winner. But it’s the comments that Quartararo made during the qualifying stage that convinced us to skip betting on him.
He said the following: “let’s say I am not super angry because I know I did my best and I cannot do much better.” To us, that sounds like a clear admission that Quartararo doesn’t believe his bike has what it takes to win this year — not now or later in the season. The Yamaha bike just lacks the straight-line speed to win another title. Quartararo knows that and you should too. Don’t bet on the current champion because we have two better choices below.
Bet On The Other Two Betting Favorites
While we sense Quartararo’s betting line is “juiced” because of his reputation, we do not feel the same about the other two odds-on betting favorites — Marquez and Bagnaia. We’re very much advising you to bet on BOTH of ‘em. No need to pick one or the other because the odds are long enough on both sides that profits will remain intact so long as one of the two wins.
Let’s begin with Marquez, whose betting odds have shot up the past few months. At first, many thought an eye injury — which was causing him to see double — would keep him off the grid. Welp, no such thing happened. Marquez is back and dare we say, he’s almost looking like his old self again? The eight-time world champion (six of which coming in the MotoGP class) placed fifth in Qatar. Honda has also re-done its bike, but once Marquez gets a better handle of it, we expect him to be a podium regular.
As for Bagnaia, after all the praise we and the racing world heaped on Ducati, you have to take one of its riders. Johann Zarco almost earned this choice, but we’re playing it “safe” with a proven commodity like Bagnaia. He finished strong at the end of 2021, winning four of the final six races. That’s a “buy sign” in a highly-competitive betting field, hence our selection here.
