Value on Boise in the El Camino Real

Value on Boise in the El Camino Real

The race is a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race, offering 10-4-2-1 points to its top four finishers. It also offers the winner an automatic berth to the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown.  A Preakness bid for the El Camino Real Derby winner is fitting, since its winners have such a good history in the race.

Just last year, Rombauer parlayed his El Camino Real Derby win into a victory in Baltimore. Tank’s Prospect (1985), California superstar Snow Chief (1986), and Tabasco Cat (1994) all won the El Camino Real Derby and the Preakness, and Tabasco Cat went on to win the Belmont Stakes as well!

These are the latest El Camino Real Derby betting odds. The odds will firm up closer to the race, but this could mean great opportunities for you. Keep an eye on them, and place your bets online when you see an overlay on your pick. You can lock in your odds, and be confident that you made an excellent bet. El Camino Real Derby Handicapping

Now that you know where to bet the race, and have seen the list of contenders, let’s get handicapping!

Keep in mind that the main track at Golden Gate Fields is made of Tapeta. Some horses take well to it; others do not, since the footing is quite different from dirt. Turf form, on the other hand, can be more transferable to Tapeta. Furthermore, if a horse has run at another Tapeta track like Woodbine or Presque Isle or Turfway, that form tends to transfer very well.

El Camino Real Derby Favorites

#2 Mackinnon is the class of the field, after a troubled third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) two starts ago, and will be the favorite. Though he has never tried Tapeta before, his turf form bodes well. This is a class drop compared to his more recent races, he is bred nicely for the extra furlong, and he has a strong chance as the likely favorite.

The most interesting betting horse in the field is #6 Boise.  He has two wins, including a two-back stakes win at Golden Gate in his only start over Tapeta. Though he disappointed at Santa Anita last out, his three-back stakes try on the Breeders' Cup undercard was a strong effort, and he has an excellent chance if he can run back to it in this spot.

A word about #4 Blackadder is necessary because he will take betting action, just because he is trained by Bob Baffert. Though Baffert can send live horses to the El Camino Real, Blackadder has yet to try anything but dirt. And, his last-out maiden victory was not only on dirt, but it came against horses carded for turf. This is a much tougher test, and he will be an underlay.

El Camino Real Derby Value Horses

In this eleven-horse field, there are a few interesting candidates to play in tickets alongside Boise and Mackinnon.

#11 Del Mo, Mackinnon’s stablemate in the Doug O’Neill barn, faces winners for the first time. But, he is improving, and his best form has all come at two turns on Tapeta. He has a nice pedigree for the extra furlong, and he is tactical enough to drop in wherever there is space from the outside, and make a late run.

#1 Stormy Samurai is hemmed in along the fence, but he has won from a rail draw before. Although he has yet to try a two-turn trip, he is another with a good pedigree to stretch out to a mile and an eighth, and it would be no surprise if he loves it. He is also well proven over the Golden Gate footing, two both his wins coming over the course.

#10 Il Bellator, one of the longest shots on the board, also interests for deeper exotic tickets. Though he has not run since a maiden win in November, his barn is solid with both layoff horses and last-out maiden winners. He woke up nicely in that maiden win, his first start at a two-turn trip, and has the tactical speed to get a good outside stalking trip from this gate.
