2022 PGA Championship Preview

The biggest thing to note when previewing the 2022 PGA Championship is the course. Bettors and fans are likely aware a new venue hosts the PGA Championship annually. This time, the host honors go to Southern Hills, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This venue last hosted the event in 2007 — a tourney in which Tiger Woods claimed his 13th of 15th career major win. However, Southern Hills has undergone drastic changes in the 15 years since. More than anything else, the course has been “modernized” from its original Great Depression-era design from the famed Perry Maxwell. That means trees have been removed, fairways expanded and greens restored. Moreover, it’s 300 yards longer than its 2007 iteration.

And speaking of Woods, he’s officially listed on the playing field. He could always back out from now until tee time, but given his return at the Masters a month ago, we’d expect to see Tiger in full swing here.

But Woods isn’t the only legend expected to be back in the mix. Phil Mickelson is also on the field list. Lefty is the defending champion of this major (becoming the oldest player ever to win one at 50 years old), but he’s been on a sabbatical since the Saudi league fiasco. Two of Mickelson’s six career majors have come in this tournament so you’d think he’ll partake, but there’s no telling after the wreckage caused by the LIV Golf series.

Best Betting Picks To Win 2022 PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite to win the 2022 PGA Championship at a whopping +1100. With how lopsided that betting line is, bettors naturally have a lot of cushion to wager on a multitude of different golfers to win. If you’re doing so — which you almost have to with any golf tourney — then we’d start with the golfers listed underneath. After doing the research, we’re confident these three can contend for a major title:

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler is every bit deserving to be the current favorite to win across top-used golf betting sites. The 25-year-old is on an absolute tear reminiscent of Tiger in his prime — no hyperbole. In 2022 alone, Scheffler has won four tourneys (one fewer than the rest of the top-10 players in the world combined), the most recent one being at The Masters. This hot streak has vaulted him into the No. 1 world ranking.

Perhaps most impressive about Scheffler's victories is where he’s won. All four victories came in tourneys where the strength of the field was at least 500. In other words, Scheffler is beating the “best of the best” and what would you know, that’s the same exact predicament awaiting him in Southern Hills. You’d have to be crazy not to throw money at Scheffler here after this extraordinary stretch of play.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is also streaky going into the PGA Championship — maybe not at the level of Scheffler, but a respectable amount nonetheless. He’s finished top-5 in back-to-back events, first at the Masters then at the most recent Wells Fargo Championship. After two close finishes, the question is, can McIlroy actually finish and win one of these tourneys?

After all, it has been eight long years since McIlroy last won a major. But to his credit, he’s practically won everything there is to win — including the Players Championship, FedEx Cups, Race to Dubai, World Golf Championships, and so forth. Any doubts about McIlroy's “clutch ability” are wildly exaggerated. So yes, we’re putting money on the Irish. He’s playing too well as of late to skip out on him.

Cameron Smith

For our third and final pick, we’re sticking to the script of our two previous selections — a golfer with a lot of momentum in 2022. Cameron Smith fits that bill and honestly, outside of Scheffler, no one on the tour is playing better than Smith. The World’s No. 4-ranked player has two tourney victories and was in the hunt at Augusta before a triple-bogey on the 12th hole killed his chances. Heartbreak be damned, we’re banking Smith gets his redemption story at the PGA Championship.
