British Grand Prix Preview

As it’s been all year, all eyes are on Verstappen. There’s no other way to begin a preview of the British Grand Prix without discussing the dominance of Red Bull’s top driver. Verstappen held off Charles Leclerc to win last weekend’s Austria Grand Prix — a home event of sorts for Red Bull. He’s up to seven wins in nine races, enough to build an almost insurmountable 81-point lead on the standings.

Given Verstappen’s stranglehold on the sport, it’s zero wonder why he’s the overwhelming betting favorite to win the British GP. We mean, just look at the latest Formula 1 odds:

Fernando Alonso+1600+1600+1600
George Russell+2200+2200+2200
Carlos Sainz+2800+2800+2800

For all of Verstappen’s success, especially the past three years, winning the British GP has eluded his career. While he has won at Silverstone before — the 2020 70th Anniversary GP — a victory at the Grand Prix is not on his resume. That’s really the only way to play devil’s advocate with Verstappen at this point.

The rest of the grid features previous winners. Of course, this is historically been Hamilton’s track. His eight victories are the most in Silverstone history. Mr. Deliable Fernando Alonso also has multiple wins here (2006 and 2011). And then there’s Carlos Sainz which took first a year ago.

Best Bets For 2023 British Grand Prix

There are dozens upon dozens of British Grand Prix bets available. However, we’ve settled on three of ‘em. Here’s where we’re putting our money this weekend:

Outright Winner

Verstappen is going to win on Sunday barring a car failure of some sort or a crash. There’s zero reason to believe he won’t if nothing out of the ordinary happens. He’s won five races in a row — six if you count the sprint race last week. The gap between him and the rest of the field is way, way too big.

Obviously, Verstappen’s betting odds aren’t great. So don’t go putting a large amount of money because that’s the definition of a high-risk, low-reward bet. You don’t want to lose that sum if his engine has problems, which is the most likely scenario to see him slip. Verstappen might not lose another race this season at this pace.

Marvin Of Victory Prop

Alright, here’s a fun prop. What will the margin of victory be for whoever finishes first? There are three betting options here, which are as follows:

OutcomeBetUSBetOnlineMyBookie
Under 6 seconds+330+330+330
Between 6 and 12 seconds+275+275+275
Over 12 seconds-165-165-165

In Austria, Verstappen’s margin of victory was only five seconds — meager by his standard. However, if he hadn’t pit-stopped late, it would’ve been larger. We’ve become accustomed to 24-plus-second wins, as Verstappen pulled off in Monaco and Spain a few weeks ago.

For this bet, we’re putting money on over 12 seconds. If anything, never winning this Grand Prix might will Verstappen to a bigger performance than usual. We expect another lopsided outcome here.

Finish Podium Prop

Enough of Verstappen. His dominance has made F1 harder to watch and make money from betting. Here’s a prop about which drivers will end up on the podium (top-three finish). Betting odds are more scattered out here:

DriverBetUSBetOnlineMyBookie
Max Verstappen-450-450-450
Sergio Perez-175-175-175
Lewis Hamilton+100+100+100
Charles Leclerc+125+125+125
Fernando Alonso+135+135+135
George Russell+300+300+300
Carlos Sainz+330+330+330
Lando Norris+800+800+800

The safest bet is Alonso. We called him Mr. Reliable earlier for a reason, he’s best the most consistent non-Red Bull driver in 2023. He has 131 points, good enough for third overall. Alonso placed in the top five seven times out of eight and earned a podium spot on six occasions. Given that run, getting him at plus money is quite the bargain.

Another name to consider here is Hamilton. Not because it’s a home race for the British driver, but more importantly, Mercedes is beginning to heat up after a rough go to start the 2023 season. Hamilton has finished top-5 in each of the past four races. And get this, Hamilton has podium finishes in each of the past nine years at Silverstone. We’re not betting against that track record!
