2022 Masters Betting Advice

Betting (and life, in general) is made at the expense of roads taken and choices not made. So in other words, it’s not just about making good betting picks, it’s also about avoiding bad ones. Therefore, when compiling our 2022 Masters betting advice, we wanted to organize it as a do and don’ts list. So here it is:

Do Bet: Rory McIlroy

Perhaps the biggest storyline of the week is McIlroy’s pursuit of a career grand slam — a victory at all four majors. He’s won the other three majors, but the green jacket has eluded the all-timer. He gets another crack at the achievement (which has only been done five times in PGA history) this weekend and we’re betting it happens.

Here’s why: if there’s a playing style that’s advantageous in Augusta, it’s a power style. Welp, McIlroy is one of the best drivers on the whole tour. His ability to “hit bombs” is a key reason he has six different top 10s at this event during the past eight years. McIlroy seems to always be in the thick of the championship race at Augusta, which makes him an easy bet to make here.

Don’t Bet: John Rahm

Rahm is the consensus favorite to win at top-rated betting sites for golf. But we’re not nearly as optimistic. Rahm fell out of the world’s No. 1 ranking for a reason — he hasn’t been playing all that sharp as of late. Most of his struggles have come in the short game. Rahm has now lost strokes around the green in six consecutive starts, plus lost strokes putting in the past four events too. There’s just something off with him, which gives us big doubts about betting on the odds-on favorite. Skip a wager on him despite the favoritism from the bookies.

Do Bet: Cameron Smith

Oh, boy, do we love Smith’s +1600 betting line here. A lot. He checks the two boxes you most want out of a Masters bet — streakiness entering the event and a history of success at the course. Winner of two of his last four events played, Smith is the hottest player on the tour not named Scottie Scheffler. Moreover, in five tries at Augusta, he’s finished top-10 three different times — including runner-up in 2020. Ride Smith’s momentum to the bank here!

Don’t Bet: The Former Masters Winners Who Are Injured

Augusta National isn’t for the “faint of heart.” Everyone knows that, including bettors. That’s why betting on past winners (or high performers) is a common betting strategy. We generally wouldn’t disagree with it, except this year in the case of two players — Hideki Matsuyama and Tiger Woods. You’ll want to avoid putting money on either ex-green-jacket winner.

Matsuyama is the reigning champion, having finished 10-under 278 in last year’s tournament. Unfortunately for the defending champ, Matsuyama has been overwhelmed with injuries the last month. First, it was his back and now it’s his neck. He’s withdrawn from tournaments entirely, but at last week’s Texas Valero Open, he dropped out in the second round due to injuries. He’s nowhere near 100 percent, which makes him a bad bet.

And then there’s Woods. We don’t even know whether Tiger will play at Augusta. He hasn’t competed in an official PGA event since 2020 and admitted he is a “game-time decision” to return to the Masters this year. Our feeling is that he sits out. His near-fatal car accident was only 14 months ago, and at his older age, it’ll take more time to fully recover from it. Either way, save your money and bet on the next player instead.

Do Bet: Brooks Koepka

Koepka is far from a sure thing. In fact, it doesn’t get any more “boom or bust” material than taking Koepka at Augusta. That’s because in the past five years competing here, Koepka finished top-10 three times, but also missed the cut twice. Our rationale is, that since 2021 was a cut year, he’s overdue a “rebound” here. If he can stay within the hunt, Koepka is capable of a Sunday rally to win it for good.
