The NHL’s Metropolitan Division could also be described as America’s division. It’s the only one among the NHL’s four divisions that doesn’t contain a single Canadian club. What it does contain are some of the most dominant NHL franchises in recent years.  In 1928, the New York Rangers were the first American NHL team to win the Stanley Cup. In 1973-74 and 1974-75, the Philadelphia Flyers won back-to-back Cups, becoming the first of the NHL’s 1967 expansion teams to lift Lord Stanley’s mug. [+]

The Pittsburgh Penguins, another of the NHL’s 1967 expansion clubs, won back-to-back Cups in 1990-91 and 1991-92 and again in 2105-16 and 2016-17. The New York Islanders set a record for an American NHL team, winning four successive Cups from 1979-80 through 1982-83. The New Jersey Devils won a trio of Cups (1994-95, 1999-2000, 2002-03) and the Carolina Hurricanes (2005-06) also show a Cup on their resume.

Only the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals have yet to capture the Cup among the Metropolitan Division teams, though the Capitals did play in the 1997-98 finals, losing to the Detroit Red Wings.
