The Maple Leafs have assembled an icollection of young talent in recent years, led by Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. After years of playoff disappointments, the team had its best regular season ever in 2021-22, setting franchise records with 54 wins and 115 points. However, the Leafs suffered another crushing first round playoff exit against Tampa Bay, their fifth straight year losing in the first round.

In 2022-23, Toronto is again one of the top teams in the NHL with a 50-21-11 record for 111 points under head coach Sheldon Keefe. Matthews became the first Leaf in a decade to score 60 goals in a season and is a leading Hart Trophy candidate. But the team’s playoff fortunes remain uncertain and the club faces huge pressure to finally advance given its talented roster.

After former GM Kyle Dubas was not renewed following the latest playoff loss, the Leafs brought in veteran executive Brad Treliving as his replacement in 2023. Treliving faces the delicate balancing act of maximizing the current core’s window while keeping the roster sustainable long-term. With Matthews and Marner signed to expensive, long-term deals, the pressure on the Leafs to translate regular season success into a deep playoff run has never been higher.

How To Make Money Betting On Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs' 56-season drought since their last Stanley Cup championship in 1967 is the longest active one in the NHL. During that span, the Montreal Canadiens have added 10 more Cups to increase their league-best total to 24.

There has been hope in recent years that the Leafs' talented young core led by Auston Matthews could finally end Canada's longest Cup drought. But despite assembling high-powered offensive teams, the franchise has not made it past the first round of the playoffs since 2004. They now have the unfortunate distinction of being the first team in North American sports history to lose five straight playoff series in which they held a lead.

The pressure on the current group led by Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander to break the curse has never been higher. But until they advance in the playoffs, the Leafs will continue to carry the burden of not bringing the Cup back to Toronto in over half a century. The team and its fans hope the 56-year drought finally ends soon.
